Altenberg
Upper Franconia, Bavaria, Germany

The project area is located in a private forest in Upper Franconia, in the district of Bamberg. The Altenberg is the highest elevation in the Bamberg region, with a high timber stock, partly consisting of particularly old tree stands. It serves not only for timber production but also as a popular local recreation area.

The forest on the project area is managed under regular forestry practices. The project aims to extend the rotation age of the trees. This means that trees which would normally be harvested remain in the forest for a longer period. The underlying mechanism is an annual harvest deferral.

Through the sale of carbon removal credits, the forest owner is incentivized to forego harvesting for a defined period, thereby increasing the forest’s CO₂ sink. By contractually postponing the timber harvest for a limited amount of time, the forest continues to grow and demonstrably binds more CO₂ than in the baseline scenario.
